The Bustin' Burritos - A Space For Christer Fuglesang
This EP from the Bustin' Burritos continues their penchant for the contrast between beat box and electro strangitude and the surf sounds. I like genre bending experiments that are well done, and this certainly qualifies.

A Space For Christer Fuglesang (3/5)

Surf Fuzz Instrumental (Stereo)
Space sci-fi weirdness warbles in the opening of "A Space For Christer Fuglesang," which proves to a be a dark textured adventure in fuzz and big chords. Interrupted mid stream for more fx and a liftoff, it returns with more relentless largeness and power.

Jimi Dope (4/5)
Surf Fuzz Instrumental (Stereo)
This is a very dark number with big reverb chord whammy and space fx. The heaviness and stark imagery are foreboding and yet enticing. There's a sense of the cold harshness of deep space, yet an illusion of alien night surf. Very cool!

Back To Beat Box Beat (4/5)
Surf Fuzz Instrumental (Stereo)
Beat box percussion clicks off the tempo, while the guitars layer thick throbbing and darkness across the soundscape. It's interesting how simple and effective this is. Melodic, dark, and dangerous, and engaging through the contradictory styles and sounds.

Land, Damnit Land! (3/5)
Surf Fuzz Instrumental (Stereo)
Giant reverb chords with distortion, a relentless intensity of edgy angular guitar lines. Not really melodic, but certainly attractive is a dark and illusive way. "Land, Damnit Land!" is a very heavy track swimming in a wash of track reverb and whammy.

Killer Robot And Son (3/5)
Surf Fuzz Instrumental (Stereo)
The beat box implies the robot, while the surf lines imply the briny. "Killer Robot And Son" is a strange blend of mechanical tweakiness and laid back reverb whammy. The surf lines provide an interesting contrast to the electro goofiness.

The Bustin' Burritos - Web Demos
These three tracks were culled from various web resources. The Bustin' Burritos are a very original band, and they deserve your attention.

Picks: Beat Box Beach, Jimi Dope, Russian Moustache

Beat Box Beach (4/5)
Surf Instrumental (Stereo)
"Beat Box Beach" is a precursor to "Back To Beat Box Beat." Beat box percussion clicks off the tempo, while the guitars layer thick throbbing and darkness across the soundscape. It's interesting how simple and effective this is. Melodic, dark, and dangerous, and engaging through the contradictory styles and sounds.

Very cool!

Russian Moustache (3/5)
Surf Instrumental (Stereo)
"Russian Moustache" is darkly textured and spy influenced, with a go-go feeling that lurks beneath the angular edge. Some very cool double picked lines and a couple of nice glissandos.

The Bustin´ Burritos Frank Mills, Hair compilation by OmOmWorld. Grade 4/5

The Bustin' Burritos For your Russian/Mexican mental pictures, Grade 4/5
Label: Tandemhorror

For Your Russian/Mexican Mental Pictures is a collection of the tracks that the Bustin' Burritos have leaked out as demos over the last couple of years. Lots of cool and fun stuff here. they aren't traditional surf, but use the genre as an influence, amped with Swedish energy. Great stuff!

Picks: You're Not Much Of A Secret, Mr. Agent, Rubber Along The Road, The Ghost Of Fireball Roberts, Pablo Potemkin, Sombrero Soldier, The Friendly Dentist, Imaginary Visitors, Haunted By Henry Reverb, Them Tango Tourists, May I Borrow Your Secret Agent?

"You're Not Much Of A Secret, Mr. Agent" grade 3/5

Rhythmic chop chords and pulsing drums and bass run amok beneath a thick horn and guitar jam that's a cross between spy and soul and surf. "You're Not Much Of A Secret, Mr. Agent" is an interesting and magnetic array of sounds that command attention through its shear intensity.
Surf Instrumental Stereo

"Rubber Along The Road" grade 4/5

Programmed percussion, big guitar vibrato throb chords, and a lumbering surfable melody. This is surf oriented, though you certainly would be excused for missing the link. Very original and very cool.
Post Surf Cartoon Future Gloom Instrumental Stereo

"The Sparetime Autopsist" grade 3/5

Keys warn of bandits just down the road. Kinda like a carnival of soulless guitars. Vibrato distortion, strange days on the midway, and drama. Most unusual.
Rock Instrumental Stereo

"The Elimination Of Eugene" grade 3/5

Poor old Eugene is on the outs - permanently. "The Elimination Of Eugene" uses spy sounds and bongos, post robot tweakiness, and an almost Casio cheesiness. Nice track.
Post Surf Cartoon Future Gloom Instrumental Stereo

"The Ghost Of Fireball Roberts" grade 4/5

A long string of sci-fi sonic chops from the keys precedes the lead guitar taking over. The most surfable track here, with strong guitar and a solid surf melody. Catchy and fun, and maybe a little over the top. The fingers fly on the guitar. Totally cool!
Post Surf Cartoon Future Gloom Instrumental Stereo

"Pablo Potemkin" grade 3/5

One drunk claps mercilessly, the synth launches a prog rock progression, and then the guitar comes in with rock tones and a slithery melody line in a thick was of original sounds. Some double picking and some original arranging too.
Post Surf Cartoon Future Gloom Instrumental Stereo

"Sombrero Soldier" grade 4/5

"Sombrero Soldier" is a short blast of surf and cactus adventure. The circular riff and rhythmic cycling are both unusual and enthralling. It has the kind of intriguing nature that a poppy version of "Slip Inside This House" (Thirteenth Floor Elevators) might have. Cool stuff.
Surf Instrumental Stereo

"The Friendly Dentist" grade 4/5

The title alone is enough to get your curiosity up, don'tcha think? A reggae beat, a nifty little riff, some tweaky Theremin wails, and a catchy sound. "The Friendly Dentist" is original and crunchy with a grin!
Surf Instrumental Stereo

"An Evel Knievel Event" grade 3/5

More circular than I envision Evel Kneivel to be, this nevertheless employs some shimmering guitar, some edgy chords, and a dark circular chord progression for a disturbed ride on a phantom bike. Whammy, extended chords, programmed percussion, and some intense twang. catchy in a postmodern world.
Post Surf Cartoon Future Gloom Instrumental Stereo

"Imaginary Visitors" grade 4/5

Exotic bongos and surf twang, rhythmic richness, and an unusual structure create a new and lurid sound of irresistible danger. "Imaginary Visitors" mixes surf and cowboy and the lure of a black hole for a completely new experience.
Surf Instrumental Stereo

"Haunted By Henry Reverb" grade 3/5

Great title! Semi dramatic, colorful, and melodic. More jangle and distortion than reverb, and on the eerie side, yet inviting. The disturbed guitar-organ duet is both endearing and bothersome.
Rock Instrumental Stereo

Playful chords and summery sunset guitar lines, shimmering vibrato, and an island feel. "Them Tango Tourists" is an interesting mix of an island getaway and an underlying depression not left behind. Strangely sad, yet hopeful. Quite cool.
Surf Instrumental Stereo

"May I Borrow Your Secret Agent?" grade 3/5

Tweaky sequenced keys, vibrato twang, and urgent messages for the home office. Quite weird, yet interesting.

The Bustin' Burritos Violence & Vegetables, Grade 4/5
Label: CD 2004

Consistently original music with surf and spy and other elements blended in a whole new way. The Bustin' Burritos are developing new territory with creative and interesting structures and sounds.

Picks: Violence and Vegetables, Them Tango Tourists, Imaginary Visitors, Falta un Tornillo, The Ghost of Fireball Roberts

"Violence and Vegetables" grade 4/5

Weird siren-esq guitar noise adds to distortion laden guitar thickness, but eventually give way to a very cool, yet simple riff dominated number. The mood of "Violence and Vegetables" is dark, almost depressing, while the tone is generally light. Combining surf and spy and psych effectively, the Bustin' Burritos have tilled new soil. A very interesting song that's just surf enough, yet sits well along side psych and espionage.
Psychedelic Surf Instrumental Stereo

"Them Tango Tourists" grade 4/5

"Falta un Tornillo" is a much lighter song then the others here, with an open road adventure kind of sound, and a sense of adventure. Keys add to the carefree summer feel of the song, as do the hand claps.
Surf Instrumental Stereo

"The Ghost of Fireball Roberts" grade 4/5

The Bustin' Burritos Surfin' With Mr. Ed, Grade 3/5
Label: Bustin' Burritos 2003 CD-R Demo

Sweden's Bustin' Burritos continue down the path of original invention with a surf and twang foundation. A long way from the traditional core, this demo of five songs is both fun and serious.

Picks: Surfin' With Mr. Ed, Adventure hat on, The Friendly Dentist, Killerrobot And Son, Sombrero Soldier

"Surfin' With Mr. Ed" grade 3/5

A bit of country charm, bit guitar twang, and stinging whammy chords. "Surfin' With Mr. Ed" is a long way from the silly talking horse from the fifties TV show. Double picked guitar and charging energy, with a touch of thrashy cowboy coolness.
Surf Instrumental Stereo

"Adventure Hat On" grade 3/5

A keyboard launches this rhythmic and kinda cool song. The Keys are not the focus exactly, yet they dominate in a playful but chilly way. Not melodic, but unusual and interesting, with a sense of mystery.

Picks: Bullriding Fans

"Bullriding Fans" grade 3/5

"Bullriding Fans" is a chunky rhythm thrasher with double picked lines and ringing chords in the eighties sense. It's short (1:13) and a mere taste of what the Bustin' Burritos have to offer. Pretty cool in a frat rockin' surf sorta way.

The Bustin' Burritos Live At Ugglan, Grade 3 of 5
Label: Bustin' Burritos CD

The Bustin' Burritos are an instro rock band from Kalmar, Sweden. Their music is a blend of surf and sci-fi cheese, with a healthy does of inventive arranging. The operative word is tweaky. This CD-R was captured live on a porta studio at Ugglan studios with a few friends in attendance. The mix is rough, and some tracks labor under indistinct sound, but the band is splendid. By the time they get into a good studio setting and carefully document what they are doing, they should create quite a stir.

"Agent Mo Is Watching From A Spitfire" grade 4/5

That Agent Mo sure must be an odd man out kinda fella. Tweaky, bongo pumped, angular, off balance, and kinda grodie. "Agent Mo Is Watching From A Spitfire" is a brilliant piece of original construction, with some sort of magnetic attraction. Cartoon gloomy.

The Bustin' Burritos - May I Borrow Your Secret Agent? Betyg 6/10

Från Kalmar kommer det instrumentala rockbandet The Bustin' Burritos. "May I Borrow Your Secret Agent?"

The Bustin' Burritos - May I borrow your secret agent?
